Domino's Pizza, Inc.

United States ยท NASDAQ: DPZ ยทMarket cap:

Domino's makes and delivers pizza, earning money from its own stores and from franchise fees and food it sells to franchisees.

Domino's is a pizza company, but the surprising part is that it is really two businesses wearing one apron. The first is the familiar one: thousands of stores that sell hot pizza, bread, chicken, and desserts to hungry people who mostly order online or through its app. The second is a supply chain business that makes dough, cheese, and other ingredients and sells them to its own franchisees. That second piece is easy to miss and quietly earns a lot of the money.

The stores are mostly not owned by the company. Nearly all Domino's locations are run by independent franchisees who pay an initial fee and then hand over a slice of their sales as ongoing royalties. Why would someone sign up for that? Because Domino's gives them a known brand, a tested menu, national advertising, and a playbook that is hard to build alone. This is why the company can grow store counts fast while spending relatively little of its own cash. Domino's real edge is speed and convenience. Its app and website let people order in a few taps, then track the pizza from the oven to the door. That focus turned a pizza chain into something closer to a logistics and technology company that happens to sell pizza. For years it has leaned on this to steal customers from rivals like Papa John's International and Yum! Brands, whose Pizza Hut chain is a direct competitor.

The company's supply chain piece is the secret engine. Stores buy dough, toppings, and equipment from Domino's, which makes a steady profit on those sales whether a location is booming or just doing okay. That gives the business a cushion when retail sales slow, and the royalties arrive with almost no added cost. It is a tidy, cash-generating machine. A real risk is that its franchisees carry the store-level costs, so if their profits get squeezed, growth and morale can suffer.
