Verisk sells data and analytics that help insurance companies decide what to insure and how much to charge.
Verisk Analytics is a data company that mostly serves the insurance industry. When you buy car or home insurance, the insurer has to guess how risky you are and what to charge. Verisk sells the numbers, models, and software that make those guesses less of a guess. Think of it as the scorekeeper and rulebook for insurers: it collects huge amounts of information β property records, claims histories, catastrophe models β and turns it into products insurers rely on every day. Its customers are insurance companies, and they pay subscription-like fees, which makes revenue steady and predictable.
The business splits into two main parts. The larger one is insurance, which brings in the big majority of revenue β roughly three-quarters β and includes underwriting data, claims tools, and catastrophe risk models. The rest is a smaller group of analytics and consulting services for energy, specialized markets, and other industries. Verisk sold off its big energy research arm, Wood Mackenzie, in 2022 for about $3.1 billion, a turning point that focused the company squarely on insurance. It also spun off its financial compliance unit, now called Verisk Financial was sold, sharpening that focus further. Because the products are woven into how insurers price and process claims, customers rarely switch, which gives Verisk strong pricing power and fat profit margins.
That cash gets used in familiar ways: paying dividends, buying back shares, and making small acquisitions that add new data or tools. Verisk started in 1971 as an insurance rating bureau, became a public company in 2009, and today is headquartered in Jersey City, New Jersey. In short, it's a toll booth on the insurance industry's need to measure risk β boring on the surface, but very hard to replace.
