Vulcan Materials Company

United States · NYSE: VMC ·Market cap:

Vulcan Materials digs up rock and sells crushed stone, sand, and gravel that builders use to make roads and buildings.

Vulcan Materials is one of the biggest suppliers of the basic stuff that roads, houses, and offices are built on. It digs rock out of the ground, crushes it into different sizes, and sells it as crushed stone, sand, and gravel — an industry term called "aggregates." It also makes asphalt and ready-mixed concrete in some markets. Its customers are construction companies, paving crews, and government road departments. When you drive on a highway, the rock under the pavement very likely came from a quarry like Vulcan's.

Think of it as the giant gravel pit behind almost every new subdivision and highway project. The business is simple but hard to copy. Rock is heavy and cheap, so it's expensive to truck it far; that means whoever owns the quarry closest to a growing city has a big advantage. Roughly three-quarters of Vulcan's revenue comes from aggregates, with the rest from asphalt and concrete. The company runs hundreds of quarries, mostly in fast-growing Sun Belt states like Texas, Florida, and Georgia.

Vulcan makes money by selling volume and by raising prices, often faster than its costs rise. That pricing power is why the stock market loves it: rock is a boring product, but a nearby quarry is almost a monopoly. The company spends its cash on maintaining and expanding quarries, paying dividends, buying back its own shares, and occasionally buying rivals — like its recent agreement to acquire several quarries from Heidelberg Materials. The main risks are a slowdown in construction spending and higher interest rates, which make big building projects more expensive.
