2U, Inc.

United States Β· NASDAQ: TWOU Β·Market cap:

2U runs online degree programs for universities and operates a bootcamp business that teaches job skills like coding.

2U runs online education for universities. It builds and manages online versions of degree programs β€” mostly master's degrees β€” for schools that want to reach students who can't move to campus. Think of it as the back office, tech team, and marketing arm a university rents when it wants to teach online but doesn't want to build that machine itself. The school provides the teaching and the diploma; 2U provides the website, the recruiting, the support staff, and the software. It gets paid mostly through revenue-sharing deals, taking a cut of tuition.

The second big piece is bootcamps, mostly under the edX and earlier Trilogy brands. That business sells short, intense courses in coding, data, and cybersecurity β€” skills aimed at landing a job, not a degree. So you can think of 2U as having two engines: a longer, degree-based one tied to universities, and a shorter, skills-based one aimed at working adults who want a new career fast. Both are in the business of selling education online, and both depend on convincing people that paying for a credential is worth it.

Here's the hard part. 2U grew fast by borrowing heavily and buying things β€” most notably edX from Harvard and MIT in 2021. But the degree business slowed, students got pickier, and the debt got heavy. The stock has collapsed from once being worth billions to a tiny fraction of that. The company has been cutting costs, restructuring, and fighting to stay listed. Its free cash flow has been weak or negative, and most of any cash it generates has gone toward servicing debt and keeping the lights on rather than buying back shares or paying dividends. In short: a business with a real idea β€” helping universities go online β€” but a balance sheet that has made the last few years a survival story.
