TPG Inc.

United States · NASDAQ: TPG · Market cap: · P/E: · P/S:

TPG is an investment firm that raises money from pensions, endowments, and wealthy investors and puts it to work in private companies, real estate, and credit.

TPG is a big investment firm — the kind that pools money from pensions, university endowments, insurance companies, and wealthy families, then uses it to buy and build companies. Founded in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1992, it is best known as one of the giants of private equity, the business of buying businesses, improving them, and selling them years later for a profit.

Its biggest engine is private equity. TPG raises funds, charges investors a management fee for looking after their money, then takes roughly a fifth of the profits once investments pay off. Over the years it has owned or backed a striking range of names, from Airbnb and Spotify to athletic apparel and healthcare companies. It also runs a large credit and real estate business, which has grown into a major part of the firm and now rivals private equity in size. In short: it gets paid to find good deals, hold them, and cash out at a gain. TPG went public itself in early 2022, listing on NASDAQ. It also holds a stake in an unusual vehicle: a listed investment fund that pools investor money into a portfolio of the firm's own deals. The economics of the public company rest on a simple loop — raise more money, put it to work, collect fees and a slice of the gains, then do it again bigger. When markets are hot and exits are easy, the loop spins fast. When they freeze, profits thin out.

The main risks are plain. Private equity is cyclical: when interest rates jump, borrowing to buy companies gets expensive and selling them gets harder. Investors can also grow wary of tying up money for years. And TPG competes with far larger peers, including Blackstone, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Carlyle Group, which chase the same deals and the same checks. TPG's edge is a long track record and deep relationships, but scale is not its strong suit.
