SailPoint sells software that helps companies control who can access what inside their computer systems.
SailPoint makes software that answers a simple but surprisingly hard question for big organizations: who is allowed to see what? When a company has thousands of employees, contractors, and outside partners, each needing different levels of access to different systems, keeping track of it all by hand is impossible. SailPoint's software automates that job — deciding who gets access to which apps, watching for suspicious access, and shutting it down the moment someone leaves or abuses it. Its customers are mostly large enterprises and governments, and they pay through subscriptions, which means SailPoint collects recurring revenue year after year rather than one-time license fees.
Think of it as a bouncer for the digital doors inside a company. Instead of just guarding the front entrance, it checks every internal door — payroll, customer data, financial systems — and knows exactly who should have a key to each one. This area, often called identity governance, has become more urgent as companies move to the cloud, hire more contractors, and face stricter rules about protecting data. Rivals include Okta, Microsoft, and CyberArk, but SailPoint's focus on governing access at large, messy organizations is its main selling point.
The company went public once before, in 2017, then was bought by private equity firm Thoma Bravo in 2022 and taken private for about $6.9 billion. It returned to the public markets in early 2025, listing on Nasdaq. Its growth has been solid but not explosive, and like many software firms it has focused on keeping existing customers happy and expanding what they buy, while investing heavily in adding artificial intelligence features to spot and fix access problems faster. It generally spends its cash on running and growing the business rather than paying dividends, which is typical for a younger public software company.
