Nextpower Inc.

United States · NASDAQ: NXT · Market cap: · P/E: · P/S:

Nextpower makes and sells the metal racks and tracking systems that hold solar panels in place and tilt them toward the sun.

Nextpower is a hardware company for the solar boom. It builds the steel structures that hold solar panels on the ground — the mounting systems and the motorized trackers that slowly rotate panels to follow the sun across the sky — and it sells them to developers who build large solar farms. If you drive past a field of solar panels, the frame underneath them is the kind of thing Nextpower makes.

The interesting part is the tracker. A fixed panel sits at one angle all day and watches the sun drift away from it. A tracker mounts the panel on a moving axis and turns it east to west, squeezing out more electricity from the same panel. That extra output is why big developers pay up for trackers instead of plain fixed racks — the gain in energy over the life of a plant usually outweighs the added cost, and Nextpower is one of the larger players in that market worldwide. The business rides on solar installation volumes, which makes it cyclical in a blunt way: when developers slow down construction, orders for racks dry up too, and steel and freight costs swing its margins. Competition is real, with other mounting players and low-cost manufacturers pushing on price, and the industry has been through a rough stretch of oversupply and squeezed profits. Nextpower's scale and its relationships with large engineering and construction firms are its main defenses.

There is also a quieter tailwind. Solar farms are increasingly paired with batteries, and projects are getting bigger, both of which keep demand for the steel underneath the panels growing. Nextpower is, in the end, a pick-and-shovel seller to the energy transition: it does not own the sun or the electricity, it just sells the frame that lets the panels chase it.
