NextEra Energy Partners, LP

United States 路 NYSE:聽NEP 路 Market cap: 路 P/E: 路 P/S:

NextEra Energy Partners owns and leases renewable energy projects, like wind and solar farms, and natural gas pipelines, and pays out most of its cash to investors as dividends.

NextEra Energy Partners is a company that owns power plants and pipelines. It doesn't build them; it buys them, mostly from its former parent company NextEra Energy, and then collects the steady cash they generate. Think of it as a landlord for energy infrastructure: it holds the wind farms, solar fields, and gas pipelines, and the electricity and gas flowing through them produce predictable, contract-backed revenue.

The business exists to pay dividends. As a limited partnership, it passes most of its cash flow to unitholders, and it has raised its payout every year since its 2014 IPO. To fund growth, it relies on cheap debt, selling new units, and recycling capital by selling older assets. That model works beautifully when interest rates are low and its units trade at a premium. It becomes painful when rates rise and the units trade below what they're worth. That math caught up with the company in 2023, when management cut dividend growth to redirect cash toward debt reduction and announced the sale of its natural gas pipeline business to Kinder Morgan. The renewable portfolio still runs under long-term contracts, typically with investment-grade customers, which keeps revenue fairly stable. But the company's future now hinges less on buying new assets and more on proving it can pay down debt and stand on its own.

The core tension is simple. Investors own it for the dividend, but the dividend only grows if the company can keep borrowing and buying assets cheaply. When that engine stalls, the stock becomes a bet on balance-sheet repair rather than growth.
