MakeMyTrip Limited

India ยท NASDAQ: MMYT ยทMarket cap:

MakeMyTrip runs online travel booking sites where people in India and nearby countries book flights, hotels, buses, and trains.

MakeMyTrip is an online travel agency, which means it is a website and app where you go to book a trip instead of calling an airline or walking into a hotel. It started with flights and hotels for Indian travelers, and over time it has become something close to a one-stop travel counter: flights, hotels, intercity buses, trains, and holiday packages. It also sells to businesses, helping companies book travel for their employees.

The money comes from a few places, and this is where the business gets interesting. When you book a hotel through the site, MakeMyTrip typically earns a commission from the hotel for bringing it a customer. For flights, the margins are thin, so the company often adds a small convenience fee to your booking. It also makes money from advertising, since hotels and airlines want to be seen by people who are actively shopping for a trip, and from selling add-ons like travel insurance or seat upgrades. The customer pays, but a big chunk of the profit really comes from the suppliers on the other side. The travel market in India is a fight. The main rival is Eternal, the company formerly known as Zomato, whose travel app competes hard on hotels. There are also global giants. Booking Holdings and Expedia Group both own brands inside the country, and Airbnb takes a slice of the homestay market. MakeMyTrip's edge is that it built its brand specifically for Indian travelers, with local payment options, Indian-language support, and bus and train routes that global sites handle poorly. That focus matters because much of the country still books travel offline, so the growth runway is long.

The company is part of a bigger group. In 2016, Ctrip, now called Trip.com Group, bought a large stake in MakeMyTrip and later merged its Indian arm, Ibibo, into it. MakeMyTrip went public on NASDAQ, then delisted in 2025 and moved its primary listing to India. The real question is whether it can keep growing fast enough to justify its price while fending off deep-pocketed rivals, and whether it can turn more of those bookings into actual profit rather than just more volume.
