MKS Inc.

United States 路 NASDAQ:聽MKS 路 Market cap: 路 P/E: 路 P/S:

MKS makes the specialized equipment, instruments, and lasers that chipmakers and other manufacturers need to build and test their products.

MKS is a supplier to the people who make the world's advanced technology. When a chipmaker like TSMC or Intel builds a factory, it needs hundreds of highly specialized tools to measure, control, and inspect things at a microscopic scale. MKS sells many of those tools: vacuum valves and pumps that create the clean, airless environments where chips are made, lasers used for precise marking and cutting, and instruments that measure temperature, pressure, and light with extreme accuracy. It also sells printed circuit boards and other components used in electronics and industrial equipment.

The company is headquartered in Andover, Massachusetts, and much of its business is tied to the semiconductor industry, which buys its vacuum and photonics products. But MKS is not a one-trick pony. It also serves life sciences and medical companies, industrial manufacturers, and research labs. The common thread is precision: customers pay MKS because they need equipment that works reliably in demanding environments, and switching suppliers is risky and time-consuming once a factory is built around a specific tool. MKS has grown partly by buying other companies that make complementary products, stitching together a portfolio of brands that all sell into similar technical buyers. That strategy gives it more to sell to each customer, but it also means the company carries debt and must keep integrating new acquisitions. Its fortunes rise and fall with capital spending by chipmakers and industrial companies, which can be cyclical.

The business is a classic "picks and shovels" story: MKS doesn't make the chips or the drugs or the electronics. It makes the tools and instruments that the people making those things cannot do without. When demand for advanced manufacturing is strong, MKS does well. When factories delay building or upgrading, its orders slow down.
