Mercedes-Benz builds and sells luxury cars, vans, and the financing and services that go with them.
Mercedes-Benz is one of the world's oldest and most famous carmakers. It sells luxury cars and sport-utility vehicles under the Mercedes-Benz brand, and it also runs the world's largest luxury van business. Most people know it for the three-pointed star on the hood: a symbol of comfort, engineering, and status that customers pay a premium for.
The money comes from selling vehicles. Wealthy buyers and companies pay extra for the badge, the engineering, and the brand's reputation, which lets Mercedes earn fat profit margins on cars like the S-Class and the G-Wagon. Its vans business sells commercial vehicles — delivery vans, ambulances, campers — to businesses and fleets, and it is a steady, quieter earner. A third leg, Mercedes-Benz Mobility, provides car loans and leasing, so the company also makes money on the financing side of a purchase. The hard part is the transition to electric cars. Mercedes was early to commit to EVs, but demand has been slower than hoped, and Chinese rivals like BYD and NIO are pushing into luxury with cheaper, tech-heavy models. That has forced Mercedes to keep investing in combustion engines longer than planned while still funding battery and software development — a costly double act. Tariffs and trade tensions add friction, especially in the huge Chinese market, where the brand's sales have been squeezed.
Mercedes is controlled by a holding company, and it spun off its truck business in 2021, so it is now a pure car and van maker. It pays a healthy dividend and has bought back its own shares, returning cash to investors rather than hoarding it. The bet is that its brand and engineering depth can carry it through a bumpy electric transition — but it is no longer the untouchable luxury leader it once was, and the next few years will show whether the star still commands its old premium.
