CarMax buys and sells used cars and trucks, and also makes money by financing them for buyers.
CarMax is the biggest used-car dealer in the United States. It runs large lots where people can walk in, browse hundreds of used cars, and drive one home without haggling over the price. The company's pitch is simple: fixed, no-haggle prices and a wide selection. Most car lots make you bargain, which many people hate. CarMax turned that annoyance into a brand.
The company makes money in two main ways. First, it sells used cars and trucks to retail customers. Second, it sells wholesale vehicles at auction — the cars that are too old or too worn for its retail lots. But the real profit engine is finance. CarMax runs its own auto-finance arm, CarMax Auto Finance, which lends money to buyers and collects interest on the loans. A big chunk of its profit comes from that lending, not just from selling cars. It also sells extended protection plans and makes money arranging loans through other lenders. CarMax has been under real pressure lately. Higher interest rates made car loans expensive, which cooled demand, and its finance arm took a hit as more borrowers fell behind on payments. Stubbornly high used-car prices made shoppers cautious too. The company also faces tough competition from giant rivals like AutoNation and from online players like Carvana. To keep growing, CarMax has pushed into online buying and selling, letting customers do much of the deal from home.
CarMax is a good example of a boring business with a clever twist. Selling used cars is a low-margin grind, but attaching a loan to each sale turns a one-time transaction into years of interest income. That works beautifully when money is cheap and buyers pay on time — and it gets uncomfortable when rates rise and wallets tighten. When you buy a car at CarMax, remember: the lot sells cars, but the loan book pays the bills.
