Kinross Gold digs gold out of the ground and sells it.
Kinross Gold is a gold miner. That means it digs gold out of the ground, and then sells that gold to refineries and banks at whatever the world gold price happens to be that day. Almost all of its money comes from selling gold, not from anything fancy. If you own gold jewelry or a gold coin, some of that metal may have started in a Kinross pit.
Think of it as a giant farm, except instead of wheat it grows gold bars. The company operates mines in the United States, Brazil, Chile, Mauritania, and Canada. Its biggest and lowest-cost mines are two in the United States (Fort Knox in Alaska and Round Mountain in Nevada) plus Paracatu in Brazil and Tasiast in Mauritania. The company has spent years selling off weaker mines and putting its cash into these stronger ones, which lowered its costs per ounce. In 2024 it produced roughly 2.1 million ounces of gold, and its recent quarterly profits jumped thanks to higher gold prices and steady production.
Kinross does not just sit on cash. It pays a dividend, buys back its own shares, and invests in extending the life of existing mines. Gold miners are price takers, not price makers. They cannot set the price of gold, so the real game is keeping digging costs low and not building mines in risky places. That is why Kinross has focused on stable countries and large, long-lasting pits. Higher gold prices flow almost straight to the bottom line, which is why the stock often moves when gold does.
