Hugging Face, Inc.

United States · Market cap: · P/E:

Hugging Face runs an open platform where developers share, find, and run artificial intelligence models and datasets, and it sells paid tools and hosting to companies that want to build with them.

Hugging Face is the unofficial town square of the open AI world. It hosts a giant public library where researchers and developers upload machine learning models and the datasets used to train them, and anyone can download them for free. That library has become the default place to find open models — when a lab or startup releases a model for others to use, this is usually where it lands. The company makes its money by selling the practical stuff around that free library: paid plans, private hosting, and tools that help companies actually run and manage models. Its customers are mostly businesses and developers who want the convenience and support of a managed service instead of wiring everything together themselves. Much of the software it builds is itself open source, which helps it win goodwill and become the standard.

The company also runs Spaces, a place to host and demo AI apps in the browser, which turned it into something like a GitHub for AI demos. Its paid offering, often called the Hub or Enterprise Hub, lets teams keep models and data private, control who can access them, and run inference — basically paying to use a model without hosting it yourself. It sells those seats and services to organizations that need reliability, security, and a single place to manage their AI work. The story started in 2016 when French entrepreneurs Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond, and Thomas Wolf built a chatbot app for teenagers and found the hard part wasn't the chat — it was getting the underlying AI to work. They pivoted toward the tooling, and the company became famous for open-sourcing transformers, the software architecture behind most modern language models. That move made it a hub for the whole field. In 2023 it raised a $235 million round that valued it at roughly $4.5 billion, with investors including Salesforce and Google, and it has kept growing as the go-to home for open models.

Its strength is being the neutral meeting ground where everyone posts and shares — a network effect that's hard to dislodge. The risk is that this neutrality cuts both ways: the biggest AI labs, including Meta Platforms and Microsoft-backed OpenAI, are both contributors and potential competitors with their own hosting services. Meanwhile, money is flowing into paid inference and enterprise hosting, where cloud giants like Amazon and Google are formidable. Hugging Face's bet is that being the open, friendly standard-bearer keeps it at the center of the action even as the giants fight around it.
