Hilltop Holdings Inc.

United States · NYSE: HTH ·Market cap:

Hilltop Holdings runs a bank, a mortgage business, and an insurance company, mainly in Texas.

Hilltop Holdings is really three different businesses wearing one name. The first and biggest piece is PlainsCapital Bank, a Texas bank that takes in deposits and lends money to small and mid-sized businesses, plus some mortgage and consumer loans. Customers pay interest on those loans, and the bank earns the difference between what it pays depositors and what it charges borrowers. The second piece is a mortgage origination business, which earns fees when people buy or refinance a home. The third piece is an insurance operation that sells property and casualty coverage, mostly to small businesses, and collects premiums.

Think of it as a Texas financial supermarket: one parent company that owns a bank, a mortgage shop, and an insurer, so a customer can bank, borrow to buy a house, and insure the business all under connected roofs. The bank is by far the largest part of the story, so when interest rates move or Texas lending slows down, that's what swings the results most. Mortgage revenue jumps around with home sales and refinancing waves. Insurance premiums are steadier but smaller.

The company is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange, headquartered in Dallas, and has grown largely by acquiring other Texas banks and financial firms over the years. It pays a dividend and has bought back its own stock, using spare cash to return money to shareholders rather than only expanding. Its fortunes are tied to the Texas economy, interest rate levels, and how many people are buying homes. When rates are high, borrowing demand can cool but the bank can earn more on its loans. When rates fall, mortgage activity tends to pick up. That mix of exposures, spread across three linked businesses, is what makes Hilltop tick.
