Grab Holdings Limited

Singapore Β· NASDAQ: GRAB Β·Market cap:

Grab runs a super-app that lets people in Southeast Asia book rides, order food, and pay for things with their phones.

Grab is Southeast Asia's everyday app. It started as a ride-hailing service, like Uber, and people use it to book a car or motorbike to get across town. From there it grew into a one-stop shop: order food delivery, send packages, and pay for groceries or bills through GrabPay, its digital wallet. The whole thing runs through one mobile app, which makes it sticky β€” a user who hails a ride, orders dinner, and pays with GrabPay rarely bothers to juggle three separate apps.

The company makes money by taking a cut. When you pay a driver for a ride or a restaurant for food, Grab keeps a slice of that transaction. Its financial services arm β€” payments, lending, insurance, and wealth products β€” is the part it is betting on for the future, since digital finance tends to be more profitable than moving people and food around. The main money still comes from mobility and deliveries, which also feed the finance side by giving Grab a huge built-in customer base.

Grab's edge is scale and habit in fragmented markets, but that edge has been expensive to build. It burned through years of cash on discounts and subsidies to win customers, and it went public on NASDAQ in 2021 in a deal valuing it at around $40 billion β€” a price it has not lived up to since. It now fights rivals like GoTo in Indonesia and Sea's ShopeeFood in a region where profit margins stay thin. Still, after a long stretch of losses, Grab has been pushing toward profitability, and its cash pile and habit-driven app give it room to keep growing quietly.
