Global Payments Inc.

United States · NYSE: GPN ·Market cap:

Global Payments helps businesses accept card payments and runs software that merchants use to manage their shops.

Global Payments is a plumbing company for money. When you tap your card at a coffee shop, buy something online, or a small business runs payroll, there is a decent chance Global Payments is somewhere in the background moving that money and keeping the records straight. It does not make the card or the phone. It sits in the middle, connecting merchants, banks, and card networks, and it takes a small cut of each transaction. The company has two main businesses: a merchant side, which helps businesses accept payments and run the software that goes with them, and an issuer side, which provides the technology banks use to manage customer accounts and cards. The merchant side is the bigger and more important one, and it is where most of the growth story lives.

The merchant business is the part you would recognize. It sells card readers, online checkout tools, and software for restaurants, shops, and hotels. Think of it as the cash register, the receipt printer, and the accounting system all rolled into one subscription. Customers pay fees per transaction plus monthly software charges, and they stick around because switching payment systems is a hassle. The issuer business is more behind-the-scenes: it helps banks run credit and debit card programs, handle fraud, and manage customer data. That side is steadier but slower-growing, and Global Payments has been trimming it to focus on the merchant side.

Lately the company has been reshaping itself. It sold its medical software business and is working to spin off or sell parts of its issuer unit, aiming to become a leaner, merchant-focused company. In 2023 it bought EVO Payments, a rival that expanded its reach in Europe and business-to-business payments. The bet is simple: the merchant business grows faster, generates more recurring revenue, and is worth more to investors. Global Payments uses its cash to pay down debt from deals, buy back its own shares, and pay a small dividend. The risk is that competition from Stripe, Adyen, and Block is fierce, and merchants always want cheaper, faster ways to get paid. But for now, the company is a quiet giant that most people have never heard of, even though they use it almost every day.
