iShares U.S. Treasury Bond ETF

United States Β·Market cap:

It is a fund that holds U.S. government Treasury bonds and sells shares of that basket to investors.

This fund does one thing: it owns U.S. government Treasury bonds and lets ordinary investors buy a slice of that pile. When you buy a share, you are effectively lending money to the U.S. government alongside thousands of other investors. The government pays interest on those bonds, and that interest β€” minus a small fee β€” flows through to shareholders. It serves people who want a safe, simple parking spot for cash, plus financial advisors and institutions building bond portfolios. It trades on an exchange like a stock, so you can buy or sell it any time the market is open.

Think of it as a bucket that holds hundreds of IOUs from the U.S. government, wrapped up so you can own a piece for the price of a single share. The fund mostly holds short- and medium-term Treasuries, the kind that mature in a few years, so its value wobbles less than funds holding 20- or 30-year bonds. Its fee is tiny β€” a few cents per $100 invested. Because the U.S. government is the borrower, the main risk is not default but interest rates: when rates rise, existing bonds fall in value, and the fund's price dips. When rates fall, the opposite happens, and the fund's price tends to rise.

iShares is a brand run by BlackRock, the giant asset manager based in New York, and this particular fund launched back in 2002 β€” making it one of the older Treasury ETFs around. BlackRock makes money from the annual fee it charges shareholders, not from clever trading. The fund's income comes entirely from Treasury interest, which it pays out to investors monthly. It doesn't buy stocks, it doesn't chase growth companies, and it doesn't try to beat the market. Its appeal is boring on purpose: reliable, cheap, liquid, and easy to understand β€” the financial equivalent of a sturdy wooden chair rather than a designer sofa.
