Fiverr International Ltd.

Israel · NYSE: FVRR ·Market cap:

Fiverr runs an online marketplace where people hire freelancers for short tasks or projects and pays the bills.

Fiverr is a two-sided marketplace: on one side are freelancers selling everything from logo design and video editing to programming and voiceovers, and on the other side are businesses of all sizes buying that work. The name comes from its origin, when sellers posted simple tasks starting at five dollars. Today gigs cost anywhere from a few bucks to thousands, and buyers can browse fixed-price "packages" instead of negotiating custom contracts. Sellers set up a page that works like a storefront, and buyers pick a package, place an order, and pay. That's what makes Fiverr different from a traditional staffing agency or a consulting firm: it doesn't employ the freelancers, it just runs the store and takes a cut of each transaction.

The money comes from both sides. Fiverr charges sellers a commission on what they earn and adds a small service fee to buyers at checkout, so it takes a slice of nearly every deal that flows through the platform. Buyers pay for speed and simplicity — they get work done without writing contracts or hunting for talent. Sellers pay because Fiverr brings them customers they'd struggle to find on their own. The company also sells subscriptions like Fiverr Pro and business tools that give bigger clients more control over who they hire. Fiverr is based in Tel Aviv and listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2019, riding a wave of demand for remote freelance work that spiked during the pandemic. When lockdowns ended, that demand cooled, and growth slowed sharply — a problem the company has worked through by pushing into higher-priced, more complex services and using AI tools to help sellers deliver work faster. Its main competition is rival marketplace Upwork, along with the general reality that lots of people can find freelancers through social media or word of mouth.

One of the more interesting things about Fiverr is that it barely spends on the physical world — no warehouses, no factories, no big salesforce. It puts money into marketing to attract buyers and sellers, and into product development. That's why it can throw off real cash when business is good, and why its fortunes rise and fall with the health of the freelance economy rather than the broader retail cycle.
