Equinor is a big energy company that pumps oil and gas out of the ground and sells it around the world, and it is also building up wind farms and other low-carbon projects.
Equinor is one of the world's largest oil and gas companies. It finds and pulls oil and gas out of the ground โ mostly from underneath the sea off Norway's coast โ and sells it to other companies and countries that need fuel. Think of it as a giant offshore construction and engineering operation that happens to sell energy: it builds platforms the size of football fields in deep water, drills miles down, and pipes the fuel to shore.
The company is mostly owned by the Norwegian government, which holds a majority stake, so it is a national champion of sorts. Its main money comes from selling crude oil and natural gas, with a lot of the gas flowing to Europe through pipelines. That gas has become more important since Europe tried to cut itself off from Russian energy. Equinor also runs refineries and sells refined products, and it trades energy on world markets. Here is the honest part: Equinor's profits swing wildly with oil and gas prices. When prices are high, it gushes cash; when they crash, profits shrink fast. It still spends heavily on fossil fuels even as it talks up its green ambitions. It is building offshore wind farms and carbon capture and storage projects, but these are small next to the oil and gas business. A big chunk of its cash goes back to shareholders as dividends and share buybacks.
Its rivals are other oil giants like Shell, BP, and TotalEnergies. Norway's location gives it an edge: stable politics, deepwater expertise, and short shipping routes to European buyers. The risk is the long-term shift away from fossil fuels โ if the world cuts oil and gas use faster, Equinor's core business shrinks, and its green projects may not fill the gap quickly enough.
