e.l.f. Beauty, Inc.

United States · NYSE: ELF ·Market cap:

e.l.f. Beauty makes and sells low-cost makeup and skincare products, mostly under its own brand names.

e.l.f. Beauty sells makeup, skincare, and personal care products at prices that make the big beauty brands nervous. Its main customers are everyday shoppers in the United States and increasingly abroad, and they buy mostly through Walmart, Target, Ulta, Amazon, and the company's own website. The trick is simple: it copies the look and feel of expensive products but sells them for a few dollars instead of thirty. Most of its revenue comes from its flagship e.l.f. brand, with the rest coming from acquired labels, and roughly three-quarters of sales still come from the United States. The company reports revenue near $1.3 billion for its most recent fiscal year, up sharply from a few years ago, and it grows far faster than the old-school beauty giants.

Two newer moves matter a lot. In 2023 it bought Naturium, a skincare brand sold mainly at Target, which pushed it deeper into skin care. And it bought Rhode, a celebrity skincare brand, bringing in a fast-growing label with a loyal following. Think of it as a discount store that figured out how to make things teenagers actually want, then kept buying other cool brands to stay interesting. The stock has been volatile because investors worry about how much of the growth is real demand versus hype, and because tariffs on imports from China, where most of its products are made, could raise costs.

The business throws off real cash, and management mostly plows that money back into marketing, new products, and acquisitions rather than paying a big dividend. That is the whole bet: stay cheap, stay trendy, and keep buying small brands before they get expensive. If that works, a little company from Oakland keeps taking share from billion-dollar rivals. If it stumbles, the stock price will remind everyone that beauty is a fashion business, and fashion changes fast.
