The Estée Lauder Companies Inc.

United States · NYSE: EL ·Market cap:

It sells skincare, makeup, fragrance, and hair products under famous brand names.

The Estée Lauder Companies sells beauty products — creams, serums, lipstick, perfume, shampoo — under brands people already know and trust. Its customers are ordinary shoppers at department stores, beauty chains, online stores, and airports, plus a growing number who buy directly from the brand. It makes money by selling those products at a markup; the brand name is the main reason people pay more. Skincare is the biggest slice of sales (roughly half), followed by makeup, then fragrance, then hair care.

The company is really two stories inside one. The first is its heritage brands like Estée Lauder, Clinique, and Origins, sold mostly in the West. The second is prestige and travel retail — luxury labels sold in airports and to tourists, especially in Asia. Think of it as a landlord of brands: it doesn't invent most of them, it buys them, polishes them, and rents out shelf space in stores around the world. The problem lately is that the biggest tenant — the Chinese traveler buying in duty-free shops — has slowed down a lot, which has hurt sales and profits.

The company was started in 1946 by Estée Lauder, who sold her creams in person and built a name on personal service. Today it owns over two dozen brands, including MAC, La Mer, Jo Malone, and Tom Ford Beauty. To keep growing, it has been cutting costs, closing weaker stores, and leaning harder on skincare and fragrance. Its free cash flow mostly goes back into the business and to shareholders through dividends, though growth has been shaky, so investors are watching whether the China and travel-retail slump turns around.
