DP World Limited

United Arab Emirates ·Market cap:

DP World runs cargo ports and logistics parks around the world, charging ships and companies to move and store their goods.

DP World is one of the biggest port operators on the planet. It runs container terminals — the giant docks where ships load and unload steel boxes — across more than 60 countries. Its customers are shipping lines, importers, exporters, and big retailers who need goods moved fast and cheaply. The company makes money by charging fees for every container it handles, plus extra for storing cargo, moving it inland by truck or rail, and running free-trade zones where goods can sit without customs hassle.

Think of it as the landlord and valet of global trade: ships pay to dock, boxes pay to park, and companies pay for the warehouse space in between. About half of DP World's revenue comes from its core ports and terminals business, while the faster-growing half comes from logistics parks, freight forwarding, and marine services. The company has been buying up logistics firms aggressively — like syncreon and Topaz Energy and Marine — to become a one-stop shop for moving stuff from factory floor to store shelf. Revenue has climbed steadily, helped by e-commerce demand and rising global trade volumes.

DP World is based in Dubai and is majority-owned by the Dubai government, though its shares trade on the Dubai Financial Market. It was founded in 1972 as a single port in Dubai and grew by winning concessions to run ports in other countries. These days it reinvests a lot of its cash into new terminals and automation, and it pays a modest dividend. The big risks it watches are trade wars, shipping slowdowns, and anything that makes countries want to keep cargo closer to home.
