Cisco Systems, Inc.

United States · NASDAQ: CSCO ·Market cap:

Cisco sells the networking gear and software that move data around the internet.

Cisco is the plumber of the internet. It builds the routers, switches, and security software that internet providers, big companies, and governments use to move data from one place to another. It sells mostly to large organizations, not to you and me. Its money comes from two main buckets: hardware, like the machines that direct web traffic, and software and services, like security tools and support contracts that customers pay for year after year. Those recurring payments now make up a growing share of revenue, which is the part Wall Street likes most.

Think of it as the highway system for corporate data. Cisco doesn't sell the cars or the websites. It sells the roads, the traffic lights, and the toll booths that keep everything moving without crashing. It has been the dominant player in networking for decades, and it keeps customers loyal because ripping out Cisco gear and replacing it with a rival's is expensive and risky. Lately, Cisco has been pushing hard into cybersecurity and artificial intelligence infrastructure, including a big splash into AI-ready data centers so it can sell to the companies building out chatbots and machine-learning systems.

The company makes plenty of cash and returns much of it to shareholders through dividends and stock buybacks, while still spending billions on acquisitions to stay relevant as computing shifts to the cloud. Its challenge is growth: the hardware business is mature and faces tough competition from cheaper rivals. So the story now is whether Cisco can keep selling more software and security, where the margins are fatter and the future looks brighter.
