Crescent Steel & Allied Products Limited

Pakistan · Market cap: · P/E: · P/S:

Crescent Steel makes large steel pipes and special steel parts, mostly for Pakistan's gas and water pipeline networks.

Crescent Steel is a Pakistani manufacturer of the big steel pipes that carry gas and water across the country, plus hardened steel parts that go into machines and industrial equipment. It's one of the few companies in Pakistan that can make large-diameter spiral pipes to the tough standards gas utilities demand, and that technical barrier has kept it in a strong spot: much of Pakistan's gas transmission network runs through its pipe.

The business runs on two main pieces. The pipe side makes coated steel tubes for utilities and infrastructure projects like gas grids and water lines — customers pay per project, and demand swings with whatever pipeline work the government and gas companies are funding that year. The other side makes things like grinding balls and cast parts for cement plants and mines, which provides steadier industrial demand. Its biggest customer by far is the gas utility Sui Northern Gas Pipelines, so a slow year of pipeline spending hits the company directly, and lower-cost imported pipe is a constant threat.

Crescent Steel has been around since the 1980s and listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange shortly after. It also had a hand in the renewable energy space for a time, but the core has stayed the same: heavy steel, made in Pakistan, sold to infrastructure and industry. The business is cyclical — good years when pipelines are being built, thin years when they aren't — and that is the main thing to understand about it.
