Capri Holdings Limited

United Kingdom · NYSE: CPRI ·Market cap:

Capri Holdings sells luxury fashion and accessories, mainly through three famous brands: Michael Kors, Versace and Jimmy Choo.

Capri Holdings is a luxury fashion group that sells expensive handbags, clothes, shoes and accessories to shoppers around the world. It owns three big brands: Michael Kors, which is the biggest money-maker and makes up roughly two-thirds of sales; Versace, an Italian high-fashion label it bought in 2018; and Jimmy Choo, a fancy shoe brand. The company makes money two main ways: through its own stores and websites, and through department stores and other retailers that sell its products. Around 60 percent of sales come from the Americas, with the rest from Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Think of it as a shopping mall with three very different floors. One floor is Michael Kors, friendly and commercial with wallets and totes that lots of people can afford. Another floor is Versace, loud and glamorous with gold Medusa logos and red-carpet dresses. The last floor is Jimmy Choo, all high heels and sparkle for special nights out. Capri's bet is that owning a range of brands lets it reach different kinds of rich and rich-ish customers, from the suburban shopper to the celebrity stylist.

The company started in 1981 with Michael Kors himself designing clothes in New York. It grew fast by turning into a global "accessible luxury" brand, which means pricey but not as eye-watering as Chanel or Hermès. In 2018 the company bought Versace and Jimmy Choo to become a bigger luxury player and renamed itself Capri Holdings. Recently, a planned $8.5 billion sale to Tapestry (the owner of Coach) was blocked by a US judge in late 2024 over competition worries, so Capri is back to running the brands on its own. It has been closing underperforming stores, trimming costs, and putting more energy into its European and Asian luxury push, especially Versace.
