Cox Enterprises, Inc.

United States · Market cap: · P/E:

Cox Enterprises is a privately held American conglomerate that makes most of its money from broadband and cable TV service, car marketplaces, and local TV and radio stations.

Cox Enterprises is a family-owned conglomerate that touches millions of homes and businesses in ways they rarely notice. Its biggest engine is Cox Communications — a cable and internet provider that sells broadband, TV, phone, and, increasingly, business services to customers across the United States. Most of the money comes from one simple thing: people pay a monthly bill for the internet that keeps their homes and offices connected.

The second big piece is the car business. Cox Automotive runs Autotrader, Kelley Blue Book, Manheim, and Dealertrack — the software, data, and auction websites that help dealers buy, price, and sell used cars. Manheim runs huge physical auctions where dealers trade cars, while the websites help shoppers research and find vehicles. That collection of brands makes Cox a heavily used middleman in the used-car market. The third piece is media. Cox owns local TV stations and radio stations, and it also owns a large stake in Charter Communications, created when its cable business merged with Charter's in 2015. That stake still ties Cox's fortunes to the cable industry it once ran directly. The company is also an active investor, backing startups and digital health ventures.

Cox is controlled by the descendants of James Cox, who started with a Dayton newspaper and later turned to radio and TV, then cable under his son-in-law. Being privately held means it answers to the family rather than Wall Street, so it can hold businesses through down cycles and invest for the long haul. That makes it steady, but also exposed: broadband faces fierce competition, cable TV subscribers keep cutting the cord, and the car business rises and falls with the economy. Revenue has hovered in the several-billion-dollar range in recent years, and the company has spent heavily on technology and fiber upgrades to keep its internet service competitive.
