It sells coconut water and other coconut-based drinks to grocery stores and everyday shoppers.
Vita Coco sells coconut water. That is the heart of the business. You find it in grocery stores, drugstores, and big retailers like Costco and Walmart. Shoppers buy it because they want a drink that feels healthier than soda, and coconut water has a natural reputation for hydration and electrolytes. The company makes money by selling its branded drinks to those stores at wholesale prices, and the stores then sell them to you. Most of the money, roughly eight or nine dollars out of every ten, comes from the Americas, where the Vita Coco brand is the leader in coconut water. The rest comes from Europe and Asia.
Think of it as the brand-name coconut water in the cold case, sitting next to the store's cheaper knockoff. That brand power is the whole business. Vita Coco is the biggest coconut water brand in the world, and that scale lets it get shelf space and bargain with retailers. Beyond the flagship coconut water, the company has pushed into other drinks, like coconut milk and a sparkling coconut water line, plus a small private-label business where it makes store-brand drinks for retailers. Those newer products matter because coconut water alone is a fairly small pond, and the company wants more ways to grow.
The business was started in 2004 by two friends, Michael Kirban and Ira Liran, who heard about coconut water from a Brazilian woman at a New York bar. Since then it has grown into a public company listed on NASDAQ. Its main challenge is simple: coconut water is a niche category, and the company depends heavily on a few big retail customers. Still, it generates real cash, keeps almost no debt, and has bought back some of its own shares. It has also signed partnerships, like a deal to bring its drinks to more markets, to widen its reach. For a curious investor, the key question is whether Vita Coco can turn a single popular drink into a whole family of them.
