Cipla Limited

India · NSE: CIPLA ·Market cap:

Cipla makes and sells affordable medicines, from everyday pills to complex hospital drugs, across India and the world.

Cipla is a medicine maker with two main ways of earning money. First, it sells finished drugs — mostly "generics," which are copies of brand-name medicines that have lost patent protection — to patients, hospitals, pharmacies, and governments. Second, it makes the active ingredients inside drugs and sells respiratory and complex injectable products. India's home market is its biggest and most profitable piece, roughly a third of revenue; North America is the next big chunk, followed by emerging markets and Europe. It sells cheap pills for common illnesses like infections, heart conditions, and asthma, plus higher-margin specialty drugs such as respiratory inhalers and cancer treatments.

Think of it as the plumbing of global healthcare: when a drug's patent expires, Cipla rushes in to make the same molecule cheaply and reliably, so a $500 branded treatment becomes a $20 generic. Its best-known historical moment was supplying affordable HIV medicines to Africa in the early 2000s, which made it a household name in public health. Today its growth engine is respiratory (inhalers are hard to copy, so margins are better), a fast-growing U.S. business selling complex generics, and its One-India push into branded generics, trade generics, and over-the-counter consumer health products.

Cipla spends heavily on research and development to keep that pipeline of hard-to-copy medicines full, and it uses its cash to pay dividends, buy back shares, and fund small acquisitions and partnerships. Founded in 1935 in Mumbai, it remains one of India's largest drugmakers, with revenue growing at a healthy double-digit pace in recent years, though U.S. price pressure and regulatory inspections remain the risks a curious reader would want to watch.
