Cargotec Oyj

Finland · Helsinki: CGCBV.HE · Market cap: · P/E: · P/S:

Cargotec makes the heavy machines and systems that move cargo at ports and onto ships and trucks.

Cargotec is a Finnish industrial company that builds the big machines that move stuff around ports, terminals, and ships. If you have ever watched a container port on TV — those towering cranes stacking steel boxes like Lego — there is a good chance Cargotec's equipment was doing the lifting. The company sells to port operators, shipping lines, trucking firms, and industrial customers, and it makes money by selling the hardware plus the software and services that keep it running.

For most of its life Cargotec was a collection of three separate machinery businesses stitched together: Kalmar, which made cargo-handling equipment for ports; Hiab, which made truck-mounted cranes and loaders for moving goods on roads and at worksites; and MacGregor, which made the huge hatch covers, ramps, and cranes bolted onto ships. In 2024 the company made a big strategic bet that simpler is better. It spun off Kalmar as its own separately listed company on the Helsinki exchange and kept Hiab and MacGregor. The idea is that Cargotec is now a more focused business, and the market can value the port equipment and the on-road loading equipment on their own merits. Hiab is the heart of what remains. It makes truck-mounted cranes, hooklifts, tail lifts, and other gear that lets a single truck and driver load and unload heavy things without a forklift or a second pair of hands. That sounds mundane, but it is a genuinely good business: Hiab is the global leader in its niche, sells through a large dealer network, and earns a healthy chunk of recurring revenue from spare parts and servicing machines already out in the field. MacGregor, meanwhile, is more cyclical — it sells to shipbuilders and shipowners, so its fortunes rise and fall with the shipbuilding cycle and global trade. That is a tougher, lumpier business, and it is a real vulnerability when new ship orders slow down.

Cargotec competes with a range of machinery makers depending on the product line, including larger industrial and construction equipment players, but in truck-mounted cranes Hiab's scale and brand are hard to match. The company is headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, and its shares trade on the Helsinki Stock Exchange. It uses its cash to pay dividends and invest in its brands and dealer network rather than chase dramatic expansion. The honest summary: a solid, focused industrial company with one strong recurring-revenue engine and one cyclical ship-equipment business riding alongside it.
