Canopy Growth Corporation

Canada · NASDAQ: CGC · Market cap: · P/E:

Canopy Growth is a Canadian cannabis company that grows and sells marijuana and cannabis products for medical and recreational use.

Canopy Growth is one of the world's largest cannabis companies, growing weed and turning it into products people smoke, vape, drink, or rub on their skin. It sells dried flower, pre-rolled joints, oils, and edibles, mostly in Canada, where recreational cannabis has been legal since 2018. The company also sells medical cannabis and has pushed into the United States through a mix of acquisitions and branded products.

The business runs on a simple idea: grow cannabis cheaply at scale, then sell it under brands that retailers and consumers recognize. Canopy built enormous greenhouses in Canada, betting that legal weed would become a mass-market product like beer or cigarettes. That bet produced huge early revenue growth but also mountains of excess capacity when Canadian legal sales grew more slowly than expected. The company has burned through billions of dollars and repeatedly restructured, closing facilities and cutting staff to slow the bleeding. Its biggest swing was a $4 billion investment from Constellation Brands, the beer giant behind Corona, which took a large stake and partnered on cannabis-infused drinks. That money funded a global expansion and a push into the U.S., including a deal to buy the cannabis company Acreage. But U.S. federal law still treats cannabis as illegal, which blocks big national brands and keeps the whole industry tangled in a patchwork of state rules. Canopy's answer has been a holding company structure that lets it own U.S. cannabis assets while listing in Canada, plus cost cuts aimed at finally reaching profitability.

The stock has been brutal for shareholders: it peaked in 2019 and has fallen dramatically since, and the company has done reverse splits to stay listed. Canopy's future hinges on three things — whether U.S. federal legalization eventually unlocks a giant market, whether its Canadian operation can stop losing money, and whether its balance sheet survives long enough to see that happen. It is a company with real scale and real brands, but also a long record of spending promises that outran reality.
