Coeur Mining, Inc.

United States Β· NYSE: CDE Β·Market cap:

Coeur Mining digs up silver and gold from mines and sells it to metal buyers around the world.

Coeur Mining is a precious metals miner. That means it pulls silver and gold out of the ground, then sells those metals to refineries, banks, and industrial buyers who need them for things like electronics, jewelry, and investment. The company runs mines in North America β€” mostly in the United States and Mexico β€” and its money comes almost entirely from selling the silver and gold it produces. Last year it generated about $1 billion in revenue, with silver and gold each making up a rough half of that. Think of it as a farm, except instead of corn, it harvests shiny metal.

The business is simple but tough. You spend years and lots of cash finding a good spot, building a mine, and then digging ore out of the ground. The price you get for your metal is set by global markets you don't control, so your profit depends mostly on two things: how much metal you pull out and how cheaply you can pull it out. When gold and silver prices are high, miners like Coeur make piles of cash. When prices fall, the same mine can lose money overnight.

The big recent twist is size. In early 2025, Coeur merged with New Gold, a Canadian miner, in a roughly $4 billion all-stock deal. That turned Coeur from a mid-sized silver-focused company into a much bigger gold producer, with a major new mine in Canada. Its stock has soared this year as gold prices hit record highs, pushing its market value to roughly $11 billion. The company now spends most of its free cash flow on building and expanding mines β€” especially its new Canadian asset β€” rather than paying big dividends. That's typical for a growing miner: dig now, pay investors later. If you want to understand Coeur, just remember one sentence: it's a business that profits from the gap between what it costs to dig up gold and silver and what the world will pay for them.
