Chubb Limited

Switzerland · NYSE: CB · Market cap: · P/E: · P/S:

Chubb sells insurance policies that protect people and businesses from accidents, disasters, lawsuits, and other financial losses.

Chubb is one of the world's largest insurance companies. It sells protection — property insurance for homes and factories, casualty insurance that pays when a business gets sued, and specialty policies for things like fine art, cyber attacks, or a company executive getting kidnapped. Customers pay premiums up front, and Chubb pays out when something goes wrong. The bet is simple: collect more in premiums than you pay in claims, and invest the money sitting in between.

The company has two big parts, and the difference matters. Chubb's commercial side sells to businesses — from small shops to giant multinationals — and that's the engine of the firm. Its personal lines side sells homeowners and auto insurance, largely in the US and increasingly in high-end markets. A third piece, its life insurance business, mostly exists overseas and is a smaller, steadier earner. Together these make Chubb a truly global insurer, with major operations in the US and across Europe, Asia, and Latin America. The crown jewel is a division called Chubb Overseas General, which sells specialty insurance around the world — often policies that competitors won't touch. Chubb's edge is underwriting discipline: it is famous for walking away from underpriced risk rather than chasing volume, and for pricing catastrophe exposure carefully. That proved its worth during the 2017 hurricane season, a brutal year when many insurers lost money and Chubb held up better than most. Insurance is a commodity for many players, but Chubb sells itself on expertise, service, and a willingness to cover the odd, hard-to-insure thing.

The company is based in Zurich, Switzerland, though its roots run through the US and it has a big presence in Philadelphia and New York. It is the product of a 2016 merger between ACE Limited and the old Chubb Corporation — ACE bought Chubb but took the Chubb name because it was the stronger brand. Management has been a disciplined buyer of its own stock, repurchasing roughly a fifth of its shares over the past 15 years, a meaningful boost to per-share value. Chubb also pays a steady dividend. Its results track the insurance cycle and catastrophe losses, so a bad hurricane year can dent profits while a calm year and rising premiums can produce a windfall — which is exactly how the business is built to work.
