BioNTech SE

Germany · NASDAQ: BNTX ·Market cap:

BioNTech makes medicines that teach your immune system to fight cancer and infectious diseases.

BioNTech is a German medicine maker that built its name on messenger RNA, or mRNA — tiny genetic instructions you inject into the body. Those instructions tell your own cells to make a harmless piece of a virus or a marker found on cancer cells. Your immune system then learns to attack the real thing. The company has two distinct businesses: an infectious disease vaccines segment, which brought in the money that made it famous, and an oncology segment, which is where it is betting its future.

The infectious disease side is best understood through its COVID-19 vaccine, made in partnership with Pfizer. BioNTech invented it; Pfizer handled much of the late testing, manufacturing, and selling. That split is why BioNTech's revenue exploded to tens of billions during the pandemic and then fell back down as the world moved on — a reminder that this is a hit-driven business. Think of it as a company that had one enormous bestseller and is now building a whole new shelf of products before the bestseller fades.

That new shelf is mostly cancer. BioNTech is running trials on personalized cancer treatments — shots custom-built for a single patient's tumor — plus other cancer medicines it calls "next-generation." It also bought a UK biotech, Autolus, and a Chinese biotech, Biotheus, to widen its pipeline. The company spends heavily on research and development, so it does not pay a dividend and has no meaningful buyback program; it reinvests its cash into new drugs. Revenue is a fraction of its pandemic peak, but it has a large cash pile to fund the wait. The bet is simple: use the cash from the vaccine to buy time to prove the cancer drugs work.
