Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft

Germany 路 Market cap: 路 P/E: 路 P/S:

BMW makes and sells cars and motorcycles, mostly under the BMW, Mini, and Rolls-Royce brands.

BMW is a German carmaker that builds cars people actually want to drive. It sells sedans, sports cars, and SUVs under its main BMW brand, small quirky cars under Mini, and ultra-luxury cars under Rolls-Royce. It also makes motorcycles. Most of its money comes from selling cars to regular people and fleet buyers, though the financing arm that helps customers afford them is a big deal too.

The business works like this: BMW designs and builds cars in its own factories, then sells them through dealers and direct channels around the world. Customers pay extra for the brand's reputation for driving feel and engineering. That reputation lets BMW charge more than mass-market rivals like Toyota or Ford, though it competes hard with Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen in the premium space. In recent years BMW has poured money into electric vehicles, launching a growing lineup of EVs, and it has kept investing in software and autonomous driving features. China is a huge market for it, which cuts both ways: lots of sales, but also exposure to a slowing economy and fierce local competition from rivals like BYD. One thing that makes BMW unusual: it owns its financing arm, which lends money to car buyers and dealers. That arm is stable and profitable but it is a lender, so it carries credit risk. BMW also spends heavily on research and development to keep its cars feeling special, and it pays dividends and buys back shares with leftover cash. The company has been buying back stock in recent years, a sign management thinks the shares are cheap.

The honest downside is that carmaking is a brutal, capital-hungry business with thin margins. BMW has to keep spending on new models, batteries, and factories just to stay in the game, and a sharp downturn or a trade war can squeeze profits fast. It is a strong brand with loyal customers, but it is still a manufacturer selling big metal boxes in a crowded, cyclical market.
