Arqit Quantum Inc.

United Kingdom Β· NASDAQ: ARQQ Β·Market cap:

Arqit makes quantum-safe encryption software that helps governments and companies protect their data from future quantum computers.

Arqit Quantum is a small cybersecurity company selling a big promise: encryption that even a quantum computer cannot break. Its main product, QuantumCloud, is delivered as software. Customers install it on their own computers, and it lets two parties create secret encryption keys that are never sent across the internet, so there is nothing for an eavesdropper to steal in transit.

The reason anyone cares is that today's encryption, the stuff protecting bank transfers, military messages, and corporate secrets, rests on math problems that ordinary computers cannot solve but a large quantum computer eventually could. Intelligence agencies worry that adversaries are already recording encrypted traffic today, planning to crack it later once quantum machines get powerful enough. Arqit's pitch is to close that gap now rather than after the fact. The trouble is that Arqit is a story stock more than a business so far. It listed on the Nasdaq exchange in 2021 by merging with a special-purpose acquisition company, a blank-check vehicle, and the shares collapsed afterward as revenue stayed tiny and losses piled up. The company has cycled through leadership changes, including the departure of its founder in 2023, and it has burned through cash while chasing government and telecom customers. Its product also faces competition from "post-quantum" encryption standards being finalized by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology, which are free, software-based, and backed by major vendors.

For now, Arqit earns money mainly from selling QuantumCloud subscriptions and related encryption products, plus some satellite-based key distribution work, to a small roster of customers that includes British and European defense and telecom players. The honest summary: a genuinely interesting technology aimed at a real long-term threat, attached to a young company whose commercial traction has not yet matched its ambition.
