AppLovin Corporation

United States · NASDAQ: APP ·Market cap:

AppLovin helps mobile app makers find users and make money from their apps, mostly through advertising software.

AppLovin is a mobile advertising company. If you have ever played a free game on your phone and a full-screen ad popped up between levels, there is a decent chance AppLovin's software was involved in getting that ad in front of you. The company sits in the middle between app developers who want people to download their apps and advertisers who want to reach those people.

Its main product is a software platform called Axon, which uses artificial intelligence to decide which ads to show to which person at what moment. App developers plug their apps into this system, and it goes hunting for users who are likely to install the app and, ideally, spend money inside it. Advertisers pay AppLovin when their ads work. The company also used to own a big portfolio of its own mobile games, but it has been selling those off to focus almost entirely on the ad software, which is the fast-growing, high-margin part of the business. The AI engine is the whole story here. AppLovin trained its system on a massive pile of data about how people behave in mobile apps, and that lets it predict who will tap, install, and pay. For a game developer, that prediction is worth real money, because finding a paying player through ads is expensive and hit-or-miss. If AppLovin's system finds those players more cheaply than rivals can, developers keep coming back. That edge turned the company into one of the most profitable businesses in ad tech, with revenue growing sharply through 2024.

There is a catch, and it is worth being honest about. AppLovin depends heavily on a few big advertising platforms, especially the app stores and social networks where its ads run, so changes to their rules can hurt it. Short sellers have also attacked the company, questioning how its ad technology works and whether its results are as strong as they look. AppLovin has denied the claims, but the fight shows how much of its value rests on trusting that its AI really is as good as the numbers suggest. The company spends its ample cash buying back its own stock and paying down debt rather than paying a dividend, a sign management thinks the shares are a good place for the money.
