ARKO Petroleum Corp.

United States · NASDAQ: APC · Market cap: · P/E: · P/S:

ARKO runs convenience stores and gas stations, selling fuel and snacks to drivers across the United States.

ARKO is a convenience store and fuel company. It runs thousands of small stores where people stop to fill their gas tank, grab a coffee, and buy a snack or a drink. Most of its locations fly the bp, Shell, or Exxon brand, or it partners with them, even though ARKO itself operates the store and decides what to sell inside.

The company makes money two ways. One is selling fuel at the pump — a business with razor-thin margins, where it earns just pennies per gallon and lives on volume. The other is the store itself, where candy, drinks, cigarettes, and food carry much fatter margins. That inside-the-store business is the real profit engine, which is why ARKO keeps expanding its food and merchandise offerings and has been adding quick-service restaurants and private-label products to its shops. ARKO grows mostly by buying. It has acquired hundreds of stores from other chains and smaller operators, folding them into its network and squeezing out costs. That roll-up strategy has made it one of the larger convenience-store operators in the country, though it still competes with giants like Casey's General Stores and Murphy USA, plus dollar stores and every other place that sells a cold drink near a highway.

The business is steady but not glamorous. Fuel demand is reliable, store traffic is habitual, and the company throws off cash that it uses to pay down debt and fund more acquisitions. The risks are equally plain: thin fuel margins, heavy borrowing from all those deals, and a customer base that is sensitive to gas prices and squeezed household budgets. ARKO is essentially a bet that Americans will keep pulling into the same corner store on the way home — and that buying up more of those stores is a smart way to make money from that habit.
