Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

United States · NASDAQ: ALNY ·Market cap:

Alnylam makes RNA-interference medicines that switch off disease-causing genes.

Alnylam Pharmaceuticals is a drugmaker that sells medicines built on a trick of biology called RNA interference. Your genes send instructions to your cells through little messenger molecules, and these drugs grab those messengers and tear them up, so the body stops making a specific harmful protein. Instead of fixing a broken protein after the fact, Alnylam turns off the recipe before the protein ever gets made. Think of it as cutting the phone line so the order never reaches the kitchen.

The company makes money by selling these medicines, mostly to hospitals, clinics, and specialty pharmacies, with governments and insurance companies picking up most of the bill. Its biggest sellers are Amvuttra and Onpattro, used for a rare nerve and heart disease called ATTR amyloidosis, plus Givlaari and Oxlumo for two other rare inherited conditions. Nearly all sales come from these four drugs, and revenue has been climbing fast — the company brought in roughly $1.9 billion in 2024 and is growing at a double-digit pace as Amvuttra gets approved for more uses, including a common heart condition that could open a much larger market.

Alnylam started in 2002 with a bold bet that a Nobel-winning lab discovery could become real medicine, and for years it burned cash before its first approval in 2018. It spends heavily on research and has partnerships with big drugmakers like Regeneron and Roche, though it keeps most of its own profits. The company is not yet consistently profitable, so it plows cash back into trials and new launches rather than paying dividends or buying back stock. The simple bet: one platform, many rare diseases, and a shot at a blockbuster heart drug.
