Nippon Steel Corporation

Japan · Tokyo: 5401.T ·Market cap:

Nippon Steel makes and sells steel, from car parts to pipelines, mostly to manufacturers and construction firms.

Nippon Steel is one of the world's biggest steelmakers, and its business is simple at heart: it takes iron ore and coal, melts them into steel, and sells that steel to other companies. Its customers are not regular shoppers. They are carmakers, appliance makers, construction firms, and energy companies that need huge amounts of metal. Roughly half its steel goes to Japanese customers, with the rest shipped abroad, especially across Asia.

Think of it as the flour mill of the industrial world. Most people never buy steel directly, the same way most people never buy flour. But almost everything you touch, from a car door to a refrigerator to a bridge, started as steel from a company like this. It makes money on thin margins, so volume matters enormously. When car production slows or Chinese steel floods the market, prices fall and profits shrink fast. When demand is strong, those thin margins turn into real money.

The company is based in Tokyo and has been a pillar of Japanese industry for decades. Its future now leans heavily on two big bets. The first is overseas growth, especially its push to buy United States Steel, which would make it a much larger player in America. The second is green steel, a cleaner way of making metal using hydrogen and electric furnaces instead of coal. That is expensive and unproven at scale, but it matters because steelmaking is one of the world's dirtiest industries, and regulators and customers are pushing hard for change. In the meantime, it still pays steady dividends to shareholders and invests heavily in keeping its mills efficient.
