Prada S.p.A.

Italy · HKEX: 1913 ·Market cap:

Prada sells high-end luxury fashion, leather goods, and shoes to wealthy shoppers around the world.

Prada makes and sells luxury goods — mainly handbags, clothing, and shoes — under its own name and through Miu Miu, a younger, more playful sister brand. It sells directly to shoppers through its own stores, which is where most of its money comes from, plus a smaller wholesale business that supplies department stores and online partners. Its customers are affluent people, especially in Asia, Europe, and the Americas, who pay thousands of dollars for a single bag.

Think of it as a fashion house that runs its own boutiques instead of relying on department stores — that gives it tight control over prices and its image. The Prada brand is the steady, classic money-maker, while Miu Miu has become the fast-growing star, posting explosive sales growth recently and driving much of the group's momentum. Roughly three-quarters of revenue comes from leather goods and footwear, with the rest from ready-to-wear clothing.

The company was founded in Milan in 1913 by Mario Prada as a leather goods shop, and it's still headquartered in Italy. It listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2011. Today it uses its cash to open and renovate stores, invest in its brands, and pay dividends. Its biggest challenge is fashion taste itself — when a trend cools, sales can slow fast, and the luxury market has been uneven lately, especially in China.
