China Shenhua Energy Company Limited

China · HKEX: 1088 ·Market cap:

China Shenhua mines coal, generates electricity, and ships energy across China.

China Shenhua Energy is one of China's biggest energy companies, and it does two main things: it digs coal out of the ground, and it burns coal to make electricity. Most of its money comes from selling coal (roughly two-thirds of revenue) to steel mills, power plants, and other factories, while the rest comes from running its own power stations and from hauling coal around the country on its own railways and ships. Think of it as a company that owns the whole chain: the mine, the train that carries the coal, and the power plant that burns it.

It's based in Beijing and is controlled by the Chinese government through a state-owned parent, which matters because it means the company often has to balance making money with keeping the lights on for the whole country. Coal still supplies most of China's electricity, so demand is steady even as the country talks about going greener. Its own power plants are actually a smart hedge: when coal prices fall, the mines earn less but the power plants earn more, and vice versa.

The company throws off a lot of cash, and it uses that cash to pay big dividends to shareholders, keep its mines and plants running, and occasionally invest in things like cleaner coal technology and coal-to-chemicals projects. It's a stable, dividend-heavy stock rather than a fast grower — the kind of company a pension fund might like. The main things to watch are Chinese energy policy, coal prices, and any push to move away from coal over the long run.
