SK Innovation refines crude oil into fuels and makes batteries for electric cars.

SK Innovation is a South Korean energy company with two very different faces. One face is old-school: it buys crude oil, runs it through huge refineries, and sells the resulting gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and petrochemicals. The other face is new-school: it makes lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. The same company that keeps gasoline flowing to Korean drivers is also betting billions on the idea that those drivers will eventually plug in instead.

The refining business is the steady, unglamorous core. SK Innovation operates refineries in South Korea and also owns a stake in a big refining joint venture in China, and it sells fuels and chemical feedstocks to drivers, airlines, and plastics makers. Refining is a cyclical, low-margin game: profits balloon when oil prices and fuel spreads are wide, and they collapse when they aren't. The company's battery arm, SK On, is the growth story that investors actually care about. It supplies electric-car batteries to automakers including Volkswagen and Hyundai, and it has been building factories in Europe, the United States, and Asia at a frantic pace. Russia's invasion of Ukraine reshaped the refining side too, pushing up fuel prices and boosting profits — a reminder of how much of this business is hostage to geopolitics. The battery bet has been expensive. SK On has swallowed enormous capital spending to build plants, and it has often lost money while doing so, especially during the 2024 slowdown in electric-vehicle demand. That is the tension at the heart of SK Innovation: a mature cash-generating oil business funding a young, cash-hungry battery business that may or may not pay off big. In 2024 the company took a major step by merging SK Innovation with its parent holding company SK Inc., a complicated deal meant to simplify the group's structure and shore up its balance sheet. The rivals are formidable. In batteries, SK On fights LG Energy Solution and Samsung SDI at home, plus Chinese giants like CATL, which dominate global market share. In refining, it competes with S-Oil and global majors. SK Innovation's pitch is scale, Korean manufacturing know-how, and long-term supply deals with automakers — but it is a smaller player than CATL and has less room for error. The company also owns stakes and interests tied to SK's broader empire, and its dividend and buyback plans are modest compared with the capital it pours into factories.

For a young person trying to understand it: SK Innovation sells the fuel you burn today to fund the batteries you might use tomorrow. Whether that trade works depends on how fast the world goes electric — and on whether SK On can stop losing money before the oil profits fade.
