SJM Holdings Limited

Hong Kong · HKEX: 0880 ·Market cap:

SJM Holdings runs casinos in Macau, mostly through its flagship Grand Lisboa, and earns money when gamblers lose.

SJM Holdings operates casinos in Macau, the only place in China where gambling is legal. Its flagship is the Grand Lisboa, the golden lotus-shaped tower on the Macau peninsula, one of the city's most recognizable buildings and its oldest casino brand. The company's core customers are gamblers from mainland China who come to Macau's tables, and the house keeps a slice of every bet through the house edge — the small built-in advantage that means the casinos win over time even when individual players get lucky.

Macau's casino business splits into two worlds. The VIP segment serves wealthy high rollers, often brought in by middlemen called junket operators who extend credit and take a cut. The mass market is everyone else: tourists and casual gamblers at ordinary tables and slot machines. SJM historically leaned on VIP play, but a crackdown on junkets wiped much of that business out, pushing the company to rely more on mass-market gamblers. It also owns Casino Lisboa and a string of satellite casinos run by third parties under its license. The company's history is a Macau story. It grew out of the casino empire of Stanley Ho, the tycoon who held Macau's gambling monopoly for four decades until the government opened the market in 2002. That ended the easy years. Rivals like Las Vegas Sands, Wynn Resorts, and MGM Resorts built giant integrated resorts — casinos plus hotels, shopping, and shows — on the Cotai strip, and SJM was late to Cotai, opening its Grand Lisboa Palace there only in 2021, right as pandemic travel bans hit.

The result has been a hard stretch. SJM has lost money in recent years and carries meaningful debt, while its Cotai resort has struggled to ramp up against stronger neighbors. Its edge is history, a famous brand, and a big local base; its weakness is that it is a smaller, heavily indebted player in a market now dominated by richer competitors with better resorts. Gambling revenue in Macau has been recovering as Chinese tourism returns, which matters enormously for a company this dependent on the city's tables.
