NAVER Corporation

South Korea · KRX: 035420 · Market cap: · P/E: · P/S:

Naver runs South Korea's dominant search engine and everything attached to it — shopping, maps, news, payments, and a huge webtoon and content business.

Naver is South Korea's homegrown answer to Google, and in its home market it wins. The company runs the country's most-used search engine and the busiest web portal, the page where millions of Koreans start their day to check news, weather, stock prices, and email. Google dominates search in most of the world, but in Korea it's Naver that holds the top spot — a rare and valuable thing for a local champion.

What makes Naver unusual is that search is only the front door. The portal is a crowded town square: a shopping search service, Naver Maps, a blogging and community platform, web novels and webtoons, and Naver Pay, its digital wallet and payment service. It also owns Snow, the maker of camera and editing apps, and it runs a cloud business that sells computing power to other companies. So the company earns money in many ways at once — advertising on search and shopping, commissions from commerce, payments, cloud services, and subscriptions for content. The crown jewel on the content side is Webtoon, the digital comics platform that turned scrolling comics into a global format. Naver took it public in the United States in 2024, a landmark moment that put a Korean storytelling platform directly in front of American investors. Naver also owns a big stake in the messaging app LINE's operator through a joint venture, which has given it a vast user base across Asia — and drawn regulatory attention in Japan over how that venture is run.

Naver is a genuine technology company and it spends accordingly. It has invested heavily in artificial intelligence, building its own large language model and a hyper-scale data center, betting that it can keep Korean users inside its ecosystem and sell AI services to businesses. The competitive pressure is real: Google, Kakao, and fast-moving Chinese platforms all want the same attention and advertising money. Naver's edge is that it built a deeply local, habit-heavy internet — one that's hard to dislodge as long as it keeps giving people reasons to stay.
