Geely Automobile Holdings Limited

China · HKEX: 0175 · Market cap: · P/E: · P/S:

Geely designs and builds cars and sells them mostly in China and through its brands abroad.

Geely is one of China's biggest carmakers. It builds sedans, SUVs, and electric vehicles under brands including Geely Auto and Zeekr, and it sells them mostly to ordinary Chinese families who want a lot of car for the money. The company is headquartered in Hangzhou and listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. It is not the same as the Geely group parent that owns Volvo and other assets — this listed company is the one that makes and sells the mass-market cars.

The business runs on a simple engine: design a car people want, build it in a factory, and sell it through a big dealer network. Geely's strength has long been value — cramming features into a car at a price that undercuts foreign brands like Toyota and Volkswagen. It has also grown through its premium electric brand Zeekr and through partnerships and platforms shared across the wider Geely group, which spreads development costs. The car business is brutal. Margins are thin, factories are expensive, and the market swings with consumer confidence. Geely knows this firsthand — it went through a lean stretch a few years back when rivals flooded China with cheap electric cars and its own sales wobbled. The comeback has come from refreshing its lineup and pushing hard into electrics and plug-in hybrids, where Chinese buyers now do most of their shopping.

Geely's edge is scale and cost control in the world's largest car market, plus the ability to lean on the wider group's technology. Its vulnerability is the same as every carmaker's: it can be out-designed, out-priced, or out-marketed by a faster rival. China's electric price war has been savage, and Geely has had to cut prices to stay in the fight. Still, it remains one of the few Chinese automakers with real global ambitions and a deep enough pocket to keep investing in new models.
