SK hynix Inc.

South Korea · KRX: 000660 ·Market cap:

SK hynix makes memory chips that store and move data inside computers, phones, and AI servers.

SK hynix sells memory chips, and that's basically the whole business. There are two main flavors. DRAM is the fast short-term memory that a computer uses while it's running, and NAND is the flash storage that keeps your photos and files when the power is off. Most of the money comes from DRAM, with NAND a smaller but still big slice. Its customers are the giant device and data-center companies: phone makers, laptop makers, and cloud operators like the ones running AI servers.

Here's the part that matters right now. AI models need a special kind of super-fast memory stacked right next to the processor, called HBM (high bandwidth memory). SK hynix is the leader in this, and it's the main supplier to Nvidia, whose AI chips are the hottest thing on earth. Think of it as the memory being the desk where a worker keeps the papers they need right now — the faster and bigger the desk, the more work gets done. As AI spending exploded, so did demand for HBM, and that has driven a huge run in the company's sales and profits.

The business is a classic boom-and-bust chip cycle. When memory prices are high, SK hynix makes piles of money; when they crash, it can lose money fast. It spends heavily on new factories to stay ahead, and it's based in South Korea, home to the world's biggest memory cluster. It started decades ago as part of the Hyundai group before becoming a separate company and later joining the SK group. The big recent story is AI: HBM is now its crown jewel, and rivals Samsung and Micron are racing to catch up.
